16 Simplifying T'ai Chi
Learning the balanced movement of T'ai Chi helps provide the stability that is
essential as we loose agility. It also improves confidence which in itself produces
better mobility.
T'ai Chi can additionally combat the withdrawal that is often bought on by the fear
of falling. By incorporating socialising with a sense of achievement, anyone
loosing self-confidence will be encouraged to a significant improvement in quality
of life!
Surprisingly comparison studies have shown that classic exercises such as
swimming and walking do not significantly reduce the risk of falling for older people
as T'ai Chi does. Of course, swimming and walking are still wonderful exercises in
their own right.
MS
Exercise is an essential part of many approaches to controlling conditions like
Multiple Sclerosis where the body's spontaneous reaction to movement requests
is severely curtailed.
The slow movement and balance control of T’ai Chi becomes a valuable aid for
those with MS, where the demands of normal exercise may have become
unachievable and stressful.
Modified T’ai Chi programs with added Qi Gong, practised seated or standing,
have proved very successful as a gentle exercise routine for those with MS.
Stress
One of the key features of T'ai Chi and Qi Gong practised for health is the
generated calmness that coined an alternative name Meditation in Motion.
For those suffering from stress and its associated anxieties, allowing Qi Gong and
simple T'ai Chi to enter into their life will definitely prove to be a positive benefit. It
will improve their mind, help relaxation and improve mental strength so they can
better cope with perceived problems.
The same also applies to those suffering with other chronic medical conditions.
They are very likely to be mentally stressed and depressed because of an
increasing inability to function normally on a day-to-day basis.
T'ai Chi is equally beneficial to combat the low level stress of life in modern
society. We all experience this to one degree or another, and a little Qi Gong
seated at our desk or when the kids are playing, or a short practice during the lunch
break, can liberate new energy and turn a bad day around.
